History of League City, TX

League City was first developed in the 1890s by George Washington Butler, an influential stock breeder, with the backing of wealthy financier John Charles League. Throughout the town’s early history, there was a strong cross-railroad-track rivalry with neighboring Clear Creek. By the turn of the century, the two towns merged into League City, and the city grew as both its own commercial center and as a bedroom community for Houston.

League City has a population of just under 91,000. 74 percent of its households own their own home, and 86 percent of its residents have lived in the same home for one year or longer. The median value of a home is $176,000, and the median household income is $89,339. Just five percent of residents live below the poverty level, and nearly half hold a bachelor’s degree or higher.

Things to Do in League City, TX

Clear Lake is a brackish lake that empties into Trinity Bay and later Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. There is a city boat ramp under the FM 270 Bridge, and it is a popular destination for both boaters and water skiers. Canoes and kayaks are also able to head up the Clear Creek canoe trail.

Armand Bayou Nature Center is a nature preserve with bayou, prairie, and forest habitats open for biking and hiking. Its trails take visitors up close to local wildlife, and they can also learn about late 1800s farm life at Martyn Farm.
