Keeping your home warm during a League City, Texas, winter doesn’t have to be a big to-do. Take a few simple steps to keep the heat inside your house where it belongs.
Program Your Thermostat
Don’t let your thermostat turn off during the day while you’re not home, or at night while you’re sleeping. It costs more, and it’s harder to heat up your house from scratch than it is to maintain a warmer temperature. While you’re gone, set the thermostat about 10 degrees lower than your desired temperature. Program it to start heating the house 30 minutes before you arrive or wake up so you’re not shivering.
Insulate Your Windows
You might prefer weatherstripping, or plastic sheeting might be more your style. Either way, windows are a huge culprit when it comes to heat loss during the winter. First, make sure the windows are shut and locked. Then, apply whatever weatherization you desire. Keeping drafts from coming in will maximize the warmth in your home without costing you extra on heating bills.
Maintain Your HVAC System
A badly maintained furnace is not going to heat your house very well. Small furnace problems add up quickly for a furnace that’s extremely inefficient. You’ll either sink a lot of money into your heating bills, or you won’t be able to achieve the indoor temperature you want. The same goes for your ducts. If they’re dirty or blocked, the hot air from your furnace won’t be able to get through. The only way to fix these problems is to schedule HVAC maintenance.
Use the Sun
When the sun is shining, open your curtains and your blinds and let it shine in. As long as your windows are well-insulated, you won’t get any colder from opening the curtains, and the sun will warm up your house. This is especially effective with south-facing windows, but any windows will do.
